--- Recollections of Baptistown Pg27-- The place in Baptistown now the home of Peter Vanderbilt was formerly called the John Roat place. It then was included land now owned by James P. Gary, also a part of A. B. Chamberlin's farm. After the death of Mr. Roat the place was purchased by William Heath. It contained 100 acres of land, after the death of Mr. Heath the place was sold in 2 parts, his son William bought where James P. Gary now resides and William Lair bought the part on which stood the Roat house. He moved the old meeting house on the place for a barn; set out first peach orchard in that vicinity; purchased 20 acres of the John Slater farm lying on the east side of the road leading to Lockwood; sold a lot for the blacksmith shop and then sold out to David Stryker, who sold 10 acres and the buildings, I think to Abel Webster, erected the buildings where A. B. Chamberlin now resides, sold this and purchased a part of John Taylor's farm and put up farm buildings on it. This is where James Ashcroft now resides. **

--- 1850 census Raritan Twp Hunterdon Co NJ : Garrit Lair (age 35) Mary (age 27). **
---- The Garret Lair who married Sally Little, or Sarah Little, was the son of Garret Lare/Lehr/Lair and Elizabeth Butterfass. This Garret was born 16 August 1784 in Tewksbury Township, Hunterdon Co, the sixth child of this couple who were married by the minister of the Zion Lutheran Church in Oldwick. Sarah Little was the daughter of Robert and Mary Little and was still living in 1855 when her father's estate was being settled. She was described as Sarah Lair, widow of Garret Lair.
-- Here is the passage: " Little, Robert, dec'd -- Bethlehem Twsp., 1832. The widow's dower included buildings and improvements and was bounded by Rev. Holloway W. Hunt, John Cook, Jacob and Christopher Wagner and corner to a wood lot sold to John Wilson. Other lands sold to pay debts were bounded by Isaac Worman, Richard Mills, Jacob and Christopher Wagner, the dower lot, John Taylor and the Rev.Holloway W. Hunt. Widow: Mary Little. A petition of 1855 said that the widow had died survived by the following heirs: children, Watson Little; Sarah Lair (widow of Garret Lair); William Little; Furman Little; Deborah Sheets (w/o C. B. Sheets); and the following grandchildren " ---- I am omitting these children of deceased children of Robert and Mary Little. [D'Autrechy, Phyllis, compiler, More Records of Old Hunterdon County, Volume I, 1998, pp.21-22.] Garret and Saley Little were married 24 November 1808 by the same Rev. Holloway Hunt mentioned as a neighbor to Robert Little in the above paragraph. Their 8 children were born from 1809 thru 1822. This Garret died about the year 1825, although I have been unable to locate a tombstone inscription for him. For most of his children I have their exact birth dates and death dates and their marriages. Many of them were buried in the old cemetery across the street from the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Union Township. Garret Lare, his father, and also brother of your William Lair, owned a big farm about 1/2 mile down the hill from the Bethlehem church, on the main road that goes to Clinton. It is still there today, the farm not the house which was built later, and is called Milky Way Farm. So that leaves a million dollar question: Who was the first wife, or mother of his first child, for Garret Lair, son of William Lair and Sarah Boss? I had no idea there was another child born before his marriage to Hester Rittenhouse.**

**On the 20th day of May 1839, Philip Gordon left his ancestral home in New Jersey (Hunterdon County ) to become a pioneer settler in what was then “The Far West” State of Ohio . With him came Elizabeth [Harden] Gordon , his wife, his sons, Andrew and Henry , David and Sarah [Gordon] Lair (their daughter and son-in-law), and Amie Lair , and Mary Gordon , an unmarried daughter, who afterwards became Mrs. John Karr and resided one mile east of Gordon, Ohio.
**The party was equipped with covered wagons drawn by horses and their journey took two weeks. The daily progress was recorded by David Lair. Read the manuscript here
**David Lair was a harness maker and a cooper. He was responsible for platting Gordon, Ohio and did it in 1849 (plat map and surveyor's statement: It reads as follows: “The Town of Gordon is laid out in the North part of the East half of the North East quarter of Section 35 in Township Eight of Range 3 East. The Streets of said Town run North & South and East and West crossing at right angles, the lots are numbered consecutively from 1 to 27 and are 1 chain and 25 links in front and 2 chains deep except fractional Lot 27 the length of the boundaries of which are designated on the plat the width of the several streets is shown on that, a stone is set at the N. Henry M Lair left home at 16 (1861) and went to southern Indiana, then to West Milton in 1861. At that time he became an apprentice to the trade of shoemaker, but the Civil war came. In September, 1861, he enlisted in the Forty-eighth regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He is the only survivor in this locality who fought with this gallant organization. He saw much active service until the battle of Shiloh, when he was wounded in the thigh. The wound was not taken care of properly and as a result he was temporarily incapacitated and was honorably discharged on account of disability, returning to his home in October, 1862. 1863 he went to Troy, where he was employed by Simon Hustler. February, 1864, he again enlisted for service in the Union Army, joining the Eighth Ohio Cavalry, till the close of the war in 1865. He returned to West Milton July 31, 1865.
At that time Mr. Lair's brother-in-law and W. I. Tenney were conducting a shoe shop at this place, and Mr. Lair purchased Mr. Tenney's interest and went into partnership with his brother-in-law. This association continued until 1881, when he assumed entire control of the enterprise by purchase, and from that time to the present he has been the, directing head of the business. This is conducted under the style of H. M. Lair & Sons Company, and of recent years the active work of the store has been carried on by Mr. Lair's three sons. This is the largest store at West Milton and carries a complete line of shoes and men's furnishings. Its large and representative patronage has been built up by many years of honorable dealing and honest representation, and the place which it occupies in public confidence is a high one, reflecting as it does the esteem and respect in which the people of this community hold its venerable head. As a public-spirited citizen Mr. Lair has interested himself in various movements pertaining to the welfare of his community and has always supported progressive enterprises of a civic character. As a fraternalist, he holds membership in the local lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, which he joined in 1866, and he is likewise a valued comrade of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization in which he attained membership in 1885. When a young man, at West Milton, Mr. Lair was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Ann Yount, daughter of Elam Yount, of West Milton, and to this union there have been born three sons and six daughters, of whom three sons and three daughters are still living: Byron H., Frank B. and Howard K., who are engaged in conducting the store for their father; Theodosia, the wife of A. Willoughby, of West Milton, and mother of Harry Willoughby, who served in France during the World war and was wounded by shrapnel when still a mile from the fighting line, subsequently spending the greater part of his overseas service in the hospital. Mrs. Theodosia Willoughby is also the mother of three other children: Richard, Robert and Latirabelle. Mary Frances, the wife of Jesse Pfeifer, of Syracuse, N. Y. Henry M. Lair, a leading merchant of West Milton, and an honored veteran of the Civil war, was born April 13, 1844, on a farm now located in the village of Gordon, Darke county, Ohio, a son of David and Sarah (Gordon) Lair, who came to Ohio from New Jersey in 1839. After a number of years spent in agricultural pursuits, David Lair laid out a town on his farm, which he named Gordon in honor of his father-in-law, and of which he later disposed by sale. He and his worthy wife were greatly respected in their community and were the parents of twelve children. The country schools of Darke county furnished Henry M. Lair the medium through which to gain his education, and when he was sixteen years of age he left the parental roof and went to southern Indiana, where he spent the summer and fall and came to West Milton in 1861. At that time he became an apprentice to the trade of shoemaker, but the Civil war came on to interrupt his career, just as it did the careers of so many young men of the land, and in September, 1861, he enlisted in the Forty-eighth regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He is the only survivor in this locality who fought with this gallant organization. Mr. Lair saw much active service until the battle of Shiloh, when he was wounded in the thigh. The wound was not taken care of properly and as a result he was temporarily incapacitated and was honorably discharged on account of disability, returning to his home in October, 1862. By the following spring he had recuperated and again took up shoemaking, a business which he followed at Middletown until the fall, then going to Troy, where he was employed by Simon Hustler. In February, 1864, he again enlisted for service in the Union Army, at this time joining the Eighth Ohio cavalry, with which he remained until the close of the war in 1865. During his latter enlistment he had numerous stirring adventures, narrowly escaping death on several occasions, particularly when he was captured by.the enemy, from whose prison he effected a s pectacular escape. Mr. Lair returned to West Milton July 31, 1865. I saw behind me those who had gone, and before me those who are to come. I looked back and saw my father and his father and all our fathers, and in front to see my son and his son, and the sons upon sons beyond. And their eyes were my eyes. As I felt so they had felt, and were to feel, as then, so now, as tomorrow and forever. Then I was not afraid, for I was in a long line that had no beginning and no end. And the hand of his father grasped my father's hand and his hand was in mine, and my unborn son took my right hand and all, up and down the line that stretched from Time That Was to Time That Is and Is Not Yet, raised their hands to show the link. And we found that we were one....

A Prayer for Genealogists
Lord, help me dig into the past
And sift the sands of time,
That I might find the roots that made
This family tree of mine.
Lord, help me trace the ancient roads
On which my fathers trod,
And led them through so many lands
To find our present sod.
Lord, help me find an ancient book
Or dusty manuscript
That's safely hidden now away
In some forgotten crypt;
Lord, let it bridge the gap that haunts
my soul when I can't find
The missing link between some name
that ends the same as mine.N. Curtis Woods
