WILLIAM CHASE'S LIFE IN YARMOUTH, CAPE COD, MASS. The permanent settlement authorized by the court began January 7, 1639 when ten men were given permission to "take up freedom at Yarmouth." These were Anthony Thacher, John Crowe, Thomas Howes, John Coite, Madrick Matthews, Philip Tabor, William Palmer, Samuel Rider, William Lumpkin, and Thomas Hatch. That March four more men were mentioned as from Yarmouth: Nicholas Simpkins, Hugh Tilley, Giles Hopkins (son of Stephen), and Joshua Barnes, Andrew Hallet received a land grant in May. Thomas Payne and William Chase were added in June, p.5. Oyster Bay History

---1640s -- The Dutch had difficulty in populating the territory they claimed in New Netherlands and freely accepted English settlers within their territory. In the decade of the 1640s several English villages were settled within the Dutch territory including Flushing, Hempstead, Newtown and Jamaica plus the settlements at the east end, which were also claimed by the Dutch. There were also some squatter type settlements by small groups of individuals who had neither purchased the land nor obtained any permission from the Dutch. One such group included Nicholas Simkins, William Smith and John Titus who settled at the Oyster Bay Town Spot sometime in the 1640s. The exact date of their coming is not recorded but they were living there when the first purchasers arrived in 1653. Oyster Bay History

--- More than one authority completely establishes the proposition that MARY ACKERLY, daughter of HENRY ACKERLY of Connecticut, as above, married for her first husband, VINCENT SIMPKINS, the probable son of CAPTAIN NICHOLAS SIMPKINS (1634), immigrant settler, of Boston. VINCENT SIMPKINS was in Stamford, Conn. in 1641, and by his wife MARY had sons, John and Daniel Simpkins, and probably another son, Michael Simpkins, who became one of the first settlers of Elizabethtown, N. J. VINCENT SIMPKINS died in 1653 and his estate was probated in 1656. His father-in-law, Henry Ackerly, gave some of his property to his grandson, Daniel Simpkins, as appears in the inventory of the estate. **

      --Glen Cove Early History
--On May 24, 1668, a young Rhode Island inhabitant named Joseph Carpenter purchased 2,000 acres of land to the northwest of theTown of Oyster Bay from the Matinecock Indians. His intenttion was to erect a saw mill and furnish New York City with lumber desperately needed for the construction of housing.
-- Carpenter took in as partners in his venture three brothers: Robert, Daniel, and Nathaniel Coles, who were also former inhabitants of Rhode Island living in Oyster Bay; and Nicholas Simkins, also of Oyster Bay. These five businessmen chose to retain the place-name by which the Matinecock Indians had known the area, and therefore styled themselves "The Five Proprietors of Musketa Cove Plantation." Musketa (also spelled "rnusquito") translates from the Matinecock's language to roughly mean "the place of rushes. Within a rather short time, the "Five Proprietors" had dammed a small stream that ran through the valley, whose course is roughly paralleled by Glen Street today. This dam was located near the foot of Mill Hill, slightly northeast of the present fire department on a spot marked by a memorial plaque. On the dam was erected the saw mill, which by an early covenant between the "Five Proprietors" was jointly owned by each of them, and a small grist mill which was constructed by Joseph Carpenter under the condition that he grind the grain of the other proprietors "well and tolle free for ever." (Millers were remunerated for their services by receiving a percentage of the finished flour as payment... usually about 10 per cent). The lumber produced by the saw mill found a ready market in New York City, which had used up most of the indigenous trees on Manhattan Island rather quickly. By l679, just two years after Carpenter's purchase from the Indians was officially ratified by the colonial New York govemment, the mill was producing nine different thicknesses of boards and timber, as well as tile laths, shingle laths, wainscott, "feather-edged" boards for panelling, and custom-cut walnut for cabinet-making. A small portion of the mill's accounts were recorded in the "Musketa Cove Proprietor's Book," a hand- written record of the early settlers' land transactions and agreements. The accounts indicate that one of the major purchasers of Musketa Cove lumber was Jacob Leisler, a prosperous New York City merchant who would, in 1689, overthrow the colonial government of the colony and, in 1691, would be executed for treason. However, it appears that Leisler did not forget his acquaintances in Musketa Cove during his reign as ad-hoc governor in New York, he appointed Robert Coles as Captain in the Oyster Bay Militia. The saw mill had a significant impact in the development of the community: it provided a major influx of capital from outside the settlement. Although the extant lumber accounts probably amounted to a small fraction of the mill's total output (the accounts merely represent those which remained unpaid after an unspecified amount of time) they tally to about 80,000 running feet of board for a nine year period. It appears, however, that the export lumber industry was not the sole source of income. Lord Belfomont, then colonial governor of New York, in 1699 wrote to the Board of Trade in London describing Musketa Cove as one of the top four ports for smuggling on all of Long Island.
--In 1693, a French privateer was spotted lying at anchor in Musketa Cove's harbor, ostensibly to land illicit goods for resale in New York City. A British frigate, the "Richmond," was dispatched from New York to capture the ship and crew, but succeeded only in seizing the captain of the French bark.
--Also arrested was Nathaniel Coles, for his role in the plot to defraud the King and colony of their just due in customs. Coles was released several weeks later, officials fearing that "he might perish from the cold in Queens County jail."& This incident is very possibly the source of the oftrepeated but undocumented legend that Capt. Kidd buried part of his treasure in Glen Cove.

--- This branch of the Carpenter family dates in this country from 1635, when William Carpenter and his wife arrived at Hingham, Massachusetts, from Dartmouth, England. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Arnold. They removed to Providence, Rhode Island, April 20, 1636. He became a member of The First Baptist Church in America, of which, with Roger Williams and others, he was one of the founders. The Friends' Meeting House in Providence occupied a lot on Meeting Street originally owned by William Carpenter. He was repeatedly elected to the General court and was one of the most prominent men in the colony.
--- Joseph Carpenter, eldest son of William Carpenter, was born in Wiltshire, England, about 1635. He removed with his wife to Oyster Bay, Long Island, about 1635. In 1668, he bought three thousand acres at Musketa Cove (now Glen Cove) from the Indians. He married for his second wife Ann or Anna, Weeks, daughter of Francis and Elizabeth (Luther) Weeks. After the Weeks family located in Hempstead, Long Island, they were heavily fined in 1638 for "entertaining Quakers." Joseph Carpenter owned a sawmill, a grist-mill and a fulling-mill.

In that year, the Court of Assistants ordered her to pay her debts or go to prison. In October of that year she was placed in prison, where she and her child were to be found on 5 March 1671/72 when William Salter petitioned the Court for her release realizing that she could not pay him his due, and that she was in abject poverty.
-- In July 1672, Rebecca and her child were still in Boston, and still in a dilemma. She had been ordered to go to Virginia, to join her husband, but having no funds with which to pay her passage, she next submitted the following petition to the Court of Assistants of the Colony of the Massachusetts Bay on 7 September 1672 (Vol. III:223 of the printed records of that Court - 1928) [see Tyrrell book for petition, page16]
-- From the [petition] it is assumed that Rebecca and her little child did go to Virginia (Carolina) with Mr. (Isaac?) ---William Tirrill was a Carpenter or House right. He accompanied his father to Carolina ca. 1670, when his father first went there; his father claiming to have imported William as part of his household. How long William may have stayed in Carolina is not known. He returned to New England and settled in Weymouth near 1672, or a little later. He must have returned to Carolina with his son Samuel, in 1716, sufficiently long [enough] to have sold the plantation, known as THE QUARTER, which his father left to him by his Will. He is probably the William Tirrell who moved from Boston to Weymouth in 1672, and definitely the William Tirrell who became a Freeman there in 1678/9. He purchased the whole of the Pratt grant of land in Abington from the sons of John Shaw on 3 Mar[ch] 1705, and settled on this land soon afterwards. He owned a Saw Mill there which he deeded to his sons William, Gideon, and Samuel in separate deeds. He was one of the founding members of the First Congregational Church in Abington. In his Will, dated 27 Apr[il]1727, he signs as "William Tirrill," but is variously called "William Torrel" and "William Terrell" in the body of the Will. • 1. Katherine Simpkins b. 23 Dec 1698 Boston MA, d. 1760 married Rev. Robert Stanton at Salem, MA, on 5 May 1719.
--- As of 5 May 1719,her married name was Stanton. Katherine died in 1760. Of Boston, Mass. According to the Stanton book: After her husband's death Katherine moved to Boston; she was admitted to the Second church there Dec. 24, 1727. She had considerable property. From her mother's father, James Barton, she received property on Ann St., Boston. She inherited property, also, from her father's father, Pilgrim Simpkins, whose will was made in 1714 and admitted to probate in Jan. 1720. He was a wealthy man and gave his property to his sons John and Nicholas, to his daughters Marian, Rebecca and Sarah, and to the children of his son Thomas who d. in 1706.
-- Katherine's husband's estate was settled by her brother William. In 1754 she mortgaged her property on Ann St. to this brother, William Simpkins, in security for a loan of money "for her support". She died in 1760 and letters of administration on her estate were granted Dec. 25, 1760. The estate was settled by her brother William; the inventory was only Pound 84, which barely sufficed to pay debts and expenses.
-- Oct. 31, 1766 William Simpkins sells her land in final settlement of the estate. Her sons, if living, would have been old enough to have attended to this settlement, but there is no mention of her children. One of three conclusions is inevitable: (1) that they were dead by 1760; (2) that they were at a distance and the estate was not worth their attention; (3) that her land was heavily mortgaged and the mortgage held by her brother William, who simply foreclosed it by advertising; if so, there really was no necessity for the appearance for her children's names in the record. At the sale in 1766 Robert, her son, would have been 43 years old. ** **

  • James Simpkins b. 1729 New York, married an Indian maiden
---James Simpkins was born 1729 - married an Indian maid - no record of name or age. The territory of Augusta at that time was a vast wooded area. James Simpkins and wife were blessed with four children. However, the territory of Augusta had been split up into counties and at that time they were in Botetourt Co, the children were James II, Robert, Mary and Thomas.
---The first record of land was 50 acres granted to James Simpkins 1st in the year 1769 signed by Gov. Henry Lee of Virginia. It was located in Montgomery Co., Meadow Creek, Virginia. James Simpkins added to his land grant of 50 acres 1,388 acres of land and when his son James was born he willed him 415 acres.

---James Simpkins' wife was a Lawrence and there is a 9 yr old Adam SIMPKINS in the 1850 household of Stephen CHILDRESS, who lived next door to his parents, in whose household are 2 LAWRENCE boys (both "mulatto") as well as a HIX (Hicks?), along with a 68 yr Rachel HOWARD. An unusual coincidence that Simpkins and Lawrence's live with the same family and the Lawrence's are Mulatto **

---James served in the Revolutionary War from 1777 until 1780.
---Sarah Lawrence : John Lawrence and Lavinah came from Connecticut to Dutchess Co., NY. John was called Elder John Lawrence and helped organize First Baptist Church at Pawling, Dutchess Co., NY. In 1770. He was the first Pastor before, during, and after the Revolutionary War until 1785 when He went to Montgomery Co., VA., were he died in 1801. His children later went to Rockcastle Co., KY.
---Feb 2, 1796, James Simpkins, grantor, transferred 14 acres of land on Mill Stone Bottom for $50 to Messenger Lewis. ("Annal of Southwest Virginia".)
---However, there is a James "Simpson" in Montgomery Co as early as a Nov 7, 1780 Jury List, and I think this could be James Simpkins but can't prove it. A John, James & Robert "Simpson" served on that 1780 Jury hearing the case of one Peter Raisor/Razor (one of mine), brought before the court on suspicion of him being an enemy of the U.S. (probably was). I saw behind me those who had gone, and before me those who are to come. I looked back and saw my father and his father and all our fathers, and in front to see my son and his son, and the sons upon sons beyond. And their eyes were my eyes. As I felt so they had felt, and were to feel, as then, so now, as tomorrow and forever. Then I was not afraid, for I was in a long line that had no beginning and no end. And the hand of his father grasped my father's hand and his hand was in mine, and my unborn son took my right hand and all, up and down the line that stretched from Time That Was to Time That Is and Is Not Yet, raised their hands to show the link. And we found that we were one....
From: "How Green Was My Valley", by Richard Llewellyn

    A Prayer for Genealogists

Lord, help me dig into the past
And sift the sands of time,
That I might find the roots that made
      This family tree of mine.
Lord, help me trace the ancient roads
      On which my fathers trod,
And led them through so many lands
      To find our present sod.

Lord, help me find an ancient book
      Or dusty manuscript
    That's safely hidden now away
      In some forgotten crypt;
Lord, let it bridge the gap that haunts
my soul when I can't find
The missing link between some name
that ends the same as mine.

    N. Curtis Woods

WARNING....GENEALOGY POX; [very contagious to adults]

    SYMPTOMS:
Continual complaints as to need for names, dates and places. Patient has blank expression, sometimes deaf to spouse and children. Has no taste for work of any kind, except feverishly looking through records at libraries, courthouses and internet, Has compulsion to write letters and send e-mail. Swears at mailman when he doesn't stop and leave mail. Frenquents strange places such as cemeteries, ruins and remote desolate country areas. Makes secret night calls. Hides phone bills from spouse and mumbles to [him or her] self. Has strange far away look in eyes.

    TREATMENT:
Medication is useless. There is no known cure. Disease is not fatal, but gets progressively worse. Patient should attend genealogy workshops, subscribe to genealogy magazines and be given a quiet corner in the house where he or she can be alone.

    REMARKS:
The unusual nature of this disease is...the sicker the patient gets, the more he or she seems to enjoy it!
