Webb Family Genealogy

WEBB Family originally from Dorsetshire on the southern coast of Wales in England.

Sir John Alexander Webb, of Oldstock, "who was an officer under Kings Henry VII and VIII", the present generally accepted emblem, or coat of arms, was granted, June 17, 1577. This heraldic ensignia of rank in the New Nobility, that of the thegus , owe their origin in personal service to the prince then reigning. The New Nobility was accordingly one of office due to meritorious service. The device of hereditery coat of armour, a growth of the twelveth century, did much to define and mark out the noble class throughout Europe. When once acquired by grant of the Sovereign, it went on from generation to generation. They who possessed the right of coat of armour formed the class of nobility or gentry. He was granted the WEBB coat of arms in 1577.

According to its history, the Webb Coat of Arms was granted to Sir Henry Webb by Henry VIII on June 17, 1577 while at Hampton Court, during the time when Elizabeth I was Queen of England.
The WEBB Coat of Arms was granted to Sir Henry Webb while at Hampton Court (Elizabeth I was Queen of England). In a letter from Hiram Webb of New Bedford Mass., to Dr. Robert Dickins Webb of Yazoo City, Miss., year 1884, the following was written;
" The family coat of arms is a cross gule between four eagle falcons and border scroll, red with gilt letters, brown shadows on all, or crest out of a ducal coronet, and a device eagle displayed. A Crown has 2 red and 3 blue shots all gold, with red hollows, scarlet shield, and edges light yellow. The cross shows that our ancestor was a crusader. The hawks denote swiftness and courage. The coronet that he was fighting under one of the confederate ducal sovereigns of France, and that he was an officer."

The WEBB motto is " Principles not Men". " IN ALTA TENDO "

Another description, copied from the back of the Webb Family Coat of Arms states that “the cross in the arms shows that the ancestor was with King Richard Cour de Leon in the 3rd Crusade or Holy War. The falcons are the birds of Palestine and denote swiftness and courage, and they show that the ancestor was at one time employed in Palestine. The ducal crown in the crest was given to those who had been in the service of one of the sovereign dukes of The French Confederation, and the eagle shows that the ancestor had won a battle at sea while in command of the vessel in which it was fought.” **

Titles and Forms of Address
The WEBB family was originally from Dorset, one of the shires in England. For nearly two hundred years the WEBBs had resided in this place before Alexander Jr with his four sons came to America. The brothers had become quite wealthy. They sold their estate in England for a large sum of money prior to their departure. This English property was inherited through their ancestor, Sir Henry Alexander Webb.

A copy of the letter which Catherine Parr sent her Council (Cabinet Ministers) asking them to grant her beloved friend, Sir Henry Alexander Webb, the lands and estates that had been mentioned for him is still in existence. These lands had been confiscated by the King at the suppression of the monasteries and were located in Dorsetshire, England. In later years they became of value to the children who came to America.

Sir Henry Alexander Webb was usher in the Privy Council of Catherine Parr, Queen Regent of Britian in the 16th century. Catherine Parr, 6th Queen of Henry VIII of England, tactful, kindly woman to whose influence her stepchildren, the future sovereigns Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I owed much. Among the few existing documents connected with the regency of Catherine Parr was one while Henry VIII was conducting the siege of Boulogne in 1544 AD. There is in the Crotonain Collections a letter to her council headed: **

Katherine, Queen Regent, K.P. in favor of her trusty and well beloved servant, Henry Alexander Webb, gentleman, usher of her Privy Chamber." The letter is in regard to some grants and privileges to Henry Alexander Webb, but which have not been fulfilled. It concludes "we most heartily desire and pray you to be favorable to him at this our earnest request. Given under my Hand and Signet, at my Lord, the King's Majesty's Honor of Hampton Court, the 23d of July and the 36th of his Highness most noble Reign."

Webb is a quite common name throughout southwestern part of that nation. The Webb families are primarily concentrated in the English Counties of Somerset, Wiltshire, Hants, Suffolk, Norhampton and Worchestershire. The name Webb literally means "one who weaves" or "weaver". A great many Webbs migrated to America when the colonies offered good wages to men with craft skills and to those who would build a new life. In 1790, when president George Washington authorized the first Census, there were 395 Webb families listed with an average of 5.7 members per family. There were also 1864 adult and single Webbs not member of these households. These were primarily young men seeking their fortunes on the frontier. A later count, taken in 1960, revealed that the Webb name is the 121st most common name in America. At that time there were approximately 148,000 adult Webbs in the United States. EMAIL from Anne Webb Nelson ; 9-26-2006 Webb Surname DNA Project. I am about to publish the results of some research I have been doing into the WEBB legends. This will be published on the Webb Surname DNA Project website (www.webbsurnamedna.org) in the public area.
While I have not completed this research, the first segment will be posted as soon as our webmaster can get it up. This section concerns the Sir Henry Webb, Queen Katherine Parr's usher. This Sir Henry Webb had but one child, a daughter who married George Peckham. Sir Henry died in 1553, and his daughter died in 1555. He is buried at St. Katheryn Colman's in London, and she is buried at Biddlesden -- her tombstone names her as both George Peckham's wife Susan, and as the "only heir of Henry Webbe."
So this portion of your website is in error. Whoever was granted the coat of arms in 1577, it was NOT this Sir Henry Webbe, as he was dead by then
Furthermore, the DNA Project has pretty well blown the Alexander Webb and his four sons theory out of the water. We have DNA for Christopher Webb and it doesn't match RIchard Webb of CT nor ANY Southern Webb line (i.e., the William Micajah line of VA).

--- William de Richmond - The Herald's Visitation, 1681-1683, lists William as being of Yorkshire in the early 1400's. About 1430, he married Alice, daughter and heiress of Thomas Webb of Draycott, Wiltshire. Alice's mother, Elizabeth, was the daughter of Richard Nicholas and Jane. Jane's father was Nicholas St. John of Wiltshire. Upon his marriage, William Richmond assumed the name of Webb and quartered the Webb arms with his own. This procedure often was followed by Englishmen who married women inheriting more lands than the men possessed. The prime reason for assuming a wife's arms and name was to ensure that children of the marriage would have clear title to the estates coming from their mother's family. William and Alice Richmond-Webb lived at Draycott, Wiltshire.

note: ** In an application for a coat of arms, claimed that his grandfather was a hero in the War of the Roses and was granted land in Warwickshire in 1485 by Henry VII. No historical evidence has been discovered to corroborate this story of the man who would be William Shakespeare's great-grandfather. EARLY YEARS
        John Shakespeare lived between 1531 - 1601
John's father, Richard Shakespeare, was a tenant farmer of Robert Arden of Wilmecote
John was illiterate - he used glovers compasses as his signature!
He moved to Stratford-upon-Avon in 1551 to set up business trading in animals, wool, malt and corn. His father Richard produced the goods and John sold them!
He bought a house in Henley Street, Stratford , which was conveniently near the market
John Shakespeare used the skins of animals to set up trade as as a Glover and Whittawer (making saddles, harnesses and fine leather gloves)
He sold goods to the wealthy and made the right connections in Stratford - an ambitious man!
John was also involved in the dubious business of money lending!
He made enough money to purchase another house in Greenhill Street, Stratford in 1552
        THE SUCCESSFUL YEARS
He married Mary Arden in 1557 - great marriage as she was the daughter of the wealthy Robert Arden . John and Mary married at the ages of 26 and 17 respectively (a year after her father had died) In 1557 John Shakespeare was obtained Public Office when he was elected as ale-taster of the Borough of Stratford (an important role as people drank ale which was safer to drink than water!) John and Mary had eight children between 1558 - 1580 John became important and was elected Chamberlain of Stratford in 1561, Alderman in 1565 and Mayor in 1568
        THE DOWNFALL OF JOHN SHAKESPEARE
In 1570 John Shakespeare was accused of Usury for lending money at the rate of 20% and 25% Interest .
In 1570 his application to bear a Coat-of-Arms and for the title of Gentleman fails . Why? No one knows for sure but it is possibly to do with the Shakespeare's Catholic religion
In 1570 the Queen, Elizabeth I, was excommunicated by the Catholic Church and feared that her crown would be taken by Catholic plots involving Mary Queen of Scots .
Catholics were viewed with suspicion. Some of the Catholic relatives of the family were sent to the Tower of London.
In 1578 John became behind with his taxes.
In 1579 He was forced to mortgage Mary's estate, Asbies .
In 1583 Edward Arden, the head of the Catholic Arden Family was executed for his beliefs and for plotting against the life of the Queen. Edward Arden's son-in-law, John Somerville, was also arrested, tortured on the rack and died in the Tower of London for being supporters of the Catholic Mary, Queen of Scots .
In 1586 John Shakespeare was removed from the Board of Aldermen .
By 1590 John Shakespeare's only possession was the house on Henley Street .
In 1592 he was fined for not attending church .
        THE RISE OF JOHN SHAKESPEARE
By 1592 John's son, William Shakespeare, was mixing with nobles and courtiers .
In 1594 William Shakespeare would play before Queen Elizabeth. The name of Shakespeare was again accepted .
John's fortunes rose with those of his son and on October 20, 1596 he was granted permission to display a Coat-of-Arms .
In 1599 John Shakespeare was reinstated on the Town Council at Stratford-upon-Avon .
In 1601 Shakespeare's father, John Shakespeare dies .
1608 Shakespeare's mother Mary Shakespeare nee Arden dies

note: Both grandmothers of William Shakespeare were Webb girls, Mary and Abigail, daughters of Sir Alexander Webb and sisters of Sir Henry Webb of Hampton Court.
note: The baptismal register of the Holy Trinity parish church, in Stratford, shows the following entry for April 26, 1564: Gulielmus filius Johannes Shakespeare. The actual date of Shakespeare's birth is not known, but, traditionally, April 23, St George's Day, has been Shakespeare's accepted birthday, and a house on Henley Street in Stratford, owned by William's father, John, is accepted as Shakespeare's birth place. However, the reality is that no one really knows when the great dramatist was born. According to the Book of Common Prayer, it was required that a child be baptized on the nearest Sunday or holy day following the birth, unless the parents had a legitimate excuse. As Dennis Kay proposes in his book Shakespeare . ---- If Shakespeare was indeed born on Sunday, April 23, the next feast day would have been St. Mark's Day on Tuesday the twenty-fifth. There might well have been some cause, both reasonable and great -- or perhaps, as has been suggested, St. Mark's Day was still held to be unlucky, as it had been before the Reformation, when altars and crucifixes used to be draped in black cloth, and when some claimed to see in the churchyard the spirits of those doomed to die in that year. . . .but that does not help to explain the christening on the twenty-sixth.**

        • 4 Gilbert Shakespeare was baptized on October 13, 1566, at Holy Trinity. It is likely that John Shakespeare named his second son after his friend and neighbor on Henley Street, Gilbert Bradley, a glover and the burgess of Stratford for a time. Records show that Gilbert Shakespeare survived the plague and reached adulthood, becoming a haberdasher, working in London as of 1597, and spending much of his time back in Stratford. In 1609 he appeared in Stratford court in connection with a lawsuit. Gilbert Shakespeare had a long and successful career as a tradesman, and he died a bachelor in Stratford on February 3, 1612. In 1569
        • 5 Joan Shakespeare d 1646 married William Hart the hatter ,he died 1616
She was named after the first daughter that died in infancy..
-- Due to the fact that Shakespeare's children and his other siblings did not carry on the line past the seventeenth century, the descendants of Joan Shakespeare Hart possess the only genetic link to the great playwright. Joan Shakespeare's husband died 1616 and she lived the rest of her life in Shakespeare's birthplace. She died in 1646, but her descendants stayed in Stratford until 1806.

The sorrow felt by the Shakespeares' over the loss of Anne was profound, and even though they were burdened by numerous debts at the time of her death, they arranged an unusually elaborate funeral for their cherished daughter. Anne Shakespeare was buried on April 4, 1579.
        • 7 Richard Shakespeare b 1574, named probably after his paternal grandfather. Richard was baptized on March 11 of that year, and nothing else is known about him, except for the fact that he died, unmarried, and was buried on February 4, 1613 -- a year and a day after the death of Gilbert Shakespeare.
        • 8 Edmund Shakespeare b 1580. They christened him on May 3 , probably in honor of his Uncle Edmund Lambert. Edmund did not make a great reputation for himself as an actor, but, in all fairness, cruel fate, and not his poor acting abilities, was likely the reason. Edmund died in 1607 -- not yet thirty years old. He was buried in St. Saviour's Church, in Southwark, on December 31 of that year. His funeral was costly and magnificent, with tolling bells heard across the Thames. It is most likely that William planned the funeral for his younger brother because William would have been the only Shakespeare wealthy enough to afford such an expensive tribute to Edmund. Records show that the funeral was held in the morning. It is probable that the morning funeral was arranged so that Shakespeare's fellow actors could attend the burial of Edmund.

--- Immigrated to America in 1626 and settled in Braintree, Norfolk Co., Mass. **
WILL: his will was proved 2 November 1671 and inventory valued at £109.16.10, by Saml Thompson & Joseph Adams (Suff. Prob. 8:15; Suff. VII 158-9) Linzee noted that in his will, his wife is listed as Humility Web, also son Christopher, daughter Mary Sheffield, daughter Sarah Buckmaster; inventoried on 30 October 1671.
--- Immigration : He must have arrived in the Massachusetts Bay colony between 1634 and 1645, when he was made a Freeman, and definitely before 1653 when he is assessed for tax in Dedham, Massachusetts. Several references make a claim that Henry Webb may have been a brother to Christopher Webb or a relative. Whether this is true or not, it is clearly noted that Henry Webb arrived in Boston circa April 1637, on board a ship captained by Master John Drive “…bound from Weymouth to New England.” His entry in the passenger log states, “Henry Webb ind for himself, his wife, Mother, Child, five men and a maide (?oneoabit?) in goods ad value } 42s 7d.” In the same entry book he is also listed as transporting some goods, but the shorthand used by the author is difficult to decipher and the exact details are unclear; it appears he paid £1.7s.6d.
--- Of interest is the discovery of a parish record from the East Tytherly, Hampshire, England showing that a “Christopher Webb,” son of Sylvester Webb, was baptized on 15 August 1601 in East Tytherly. In his will, Henry Webb, of Boston clearly states that his deceased brother John Webb lived in Tytherly, Hampshire, England. Does this clue indicate some connection between the two men? A comparison of names, places and dates associated with either Christopher Webb or Henry Webb fails to eliminate the theory that they are siblings or relatives, but only adds fuel to the fire of confusion. Neither man mentions the other in any documentation yet examined, nor do they share in business, trade property or intermarry their familes. The only real clue is the apparent coincidental appearance of each man in the same place and in the same time period. Added to this mystery is the association of both men and their families with property in Braintree, namely the lands where the failed Iron Works once stood.
--- Occupation : He is listed as a Freeman of the Province of Massachusetts Bay in New England in May 1645. A freeman is defined as : freeman – one who is personally free, one who is not a slave or serf, subject to due process of law, etc. Only someone who was a Freeman could handle town affairs, vote, be a selectman, serve on a council, or as a member of a jury. Specifically, in reference to the Massachusetts Colony or Company, originally a freeman was a member of the Company (or who signed the Mayflower Compact), who held the right of suffrage and afterwards those that might be admitted by a majority vote of said freeman. At the start, all freeman practiced true democracy, each person having one vote on all subjects before the law, in all trials, etc. Later they acted as voters to elect representatives to the various councils and courts, which were devised to handle the growing affairs of the colony. In 1658 it was recorded, in law, that freeman must take an ‘oath of fidelity’, must not be a ‘Quaker’ or a ‘ranter’; and by 1671, a freeman was defined in the statutes, “…freemen must be twenty-one years of age, of sober and peaceable conversation, orthodox to the fundamentals of religion, and possessed of twenty pounds ratable estate in the Colony.” So upon becoming a Freeman in 1645, Christopher had to be at least twenty-one years old (closer to 45 years old), obviously he attended church regularly & followed its edicts, and he owned at least a small amount of real estate.
---Pattee made note of an entry in the Mass. Hist. Coll, (2nd Series, Vol6, p414), “1645 - That year twenty families petitioned the court for liberty to begin a plantation where Groton and his company had erected two or more houses at Shanamet, some point of Punhom’s land, but challenged by Mr. Brown of Plymouth as belonging to their jurisdiction.” Christopher Webb’s name was subscribed to the petition as a member of the Church of Braintree; it was also the same year that Christopher became a freeman.
--- LAND September 1653 the Selectmen of the Town of Dedham, Massachusetts assembled to assess the taxes, “the Countrey Rate…”, and Christopher Webb is enumerated and rated : “29 of 6 mo: 1653 Assemb Joh Kingsberrie. Joh. Dwight, Lieft Fisher, Fra Chickering, Pet. Woodward, Srgt Fisher, & Ela: Lusher the Countrey Rate made (last on the list) Christo: Webb 0 5 0”
--- --Henry Webb was a Merchant Adventurer, an overseas trader, a shipper, & an investor and commissioner of the failed Iron Works at Braintree. As it is clear that as Christopher was a member of the Church of Braintree in 1645, he must have been a resident of Braintree prior to becoming a Freeman, so it appears that there is some connection albeit merely circumstantial or coincidental without further evidence to prove one way or another. Additionally, Christopher’s son Christopher owned the land upon which the Iron Works was located, in the 1680’s, about thirty years after its failure. The Webb’s association with Braintree and the Iron Works is unusual.

---Occupation: merchant, investor in the Iron Works at Braintree, involved in transatlantic trade. He was made a Freeman 13 March 1638/9. May have at one time been Constable of Boston. He had a contract with the town (a virtual monopoly with three others) to trade with the Indians, he did consign several shipments of beaver pelts and skins on a ship laden with cargo bound for England. ***several years later, a man named Richard Webb and several others in the shoe business obtained a similar contract to regulate the trade of shoes, the manufacture of which requires a great deal of leather. All the leather required had to be obtained from either domestic cattle or trapped game animals. **
--- Henry Webb was a Merchant Adventurer, an overseas trader, a shipper, & an investor and commissioner of the failed Iron Works at Braintree.
--- LAND 29 January 1638, Mr. Henry Webb (merchant of Boston) was granted for 10 heads, 40 acres of land in Braintree. This corresponds directly to the number of individuals he transported with himself to Boston in 1637. On 28 September 1644, eight months before Christopher was proclaimed a Freeman, Henry Webb received an additional grant of 200 acres in Braintree.
--- Henry Webb’s ’10 heads’ are accounted for - as himself, wife, mother, daughter and six servants. They may have purchased land from, or otherwise resided, on Henry Webb’s additional grant, but records fail to indicate where they lived as early as the 1640’s. It does seem that Henry Webb lived in Boston, or had a home there. He was given permission in 1638 to purchase the home in which he was presently residing, by the selectmen of the Town of Boston; and also his choice of a garden, or a farm plot. He must have chosen the property in Braintree as his farm plot

--- James was a Justice of the Peace of Essex County and a signer of the Association of the Northern Neck in oppostion to the Stamp Act, February 27, 1766. He had an interest in several grist mills on Piscataway Creek, near Tappahannock, Essex County. James began construction of a home called "Mount Prospect" on a hill overlooking Piscataway Creek. This place was about "100 yards from the road leading from Tappahannock to Urbanna in Middlesex Co., five miles from the former place, about one fourth of a mile from Piscataway Creek, and three miles from Rappahannock river, with a beautiful view of the winding of the Creek, to where it entered the river with a view of the river for five miles. Yet with all it beauty it was considered very sickly. My grandfather, grandmother, three brothers and two sisters are all deposited in the family graveyard about 108 yards from the first settlement my grandfather made on the place" (MSS. of John Webb, grandson of James Webb III). **
