Welcome researchers! Welcome family! This site is a collection of genealogical information of my ADKINS ancestors, from many sources collected over many years . Some of the information comes from my own work searching databases, www, microfilm, books, and the like. Other information has been graciously passed to me from fellow family researchers and members. If you are a researcher, my hope is that here you will find a lead. If you descend from names recorded here, contact me. I am Victoria Taylor-True - Daughter of Mary Jane GARDNER and Keith Bremmen TAYLOR. My direct lines are here. More sights are linked up often, so check back *S*

Yeah that is a picture of me in 1983 in olden days attire. I know I was born in the wrong generation. I do so love the times of yesteryear. My mother says I look like my great-aunts when they were young, so as we find and locate pictures, I guess we will find out just how much I do.

This page will be a constant work in progress, as I meet new cousins, and add new photos and information. If you feel you are connected to our family, please contact us. We would love to hear from you and add "new Branches" to the tree. If you contact us and provide information, please let us know how you would like to be cited. We are forever grateful, for all cousins help! There are missing pictures and information. If you have any thing that would add to this collection and help fill in the missing spots please email me or contact me for a family sheet and I will mail you one to fill out.

This is a set of genealogical records with both ancestry and decadency sets of data based on my family. Nothing is set in stone and all things in genealogy have to be vailidated to be true. So at this point , this genealogist is data collecting and processing validation as it become founded or shared. All validation will show in the family group it belongs as well as photos and documents. If you have anything for any group, please let me know , so I can include a copy of it with the ancestor it belongs with.
~Thanks ~

The name ADKINS originated during the Thirteenth and Fourteenth centuries in England.

Charles Bardsley states in his "English and Welsh Surnames" that "...the surname ADKINS was derived from a combination of the surname Adam and the diminutive kin." Following one tradition of the Anglo-Saxon people a well liked child would have the first syllable of his name combined with the diminutive kin to form a new name. In our case, the first syllable of Adam (Ad) was combined with the diminutive kin to form Adkin. Adkin would then be the child's pet or nickname and in many cases would become his legal name for life. In old English, the name was spelled ADEKYN, however, in later centuries the name according to Bardsley "...was sharpened to Adkin." Bardsley continues "All the other spellings were formed by misspelling." This method of name forming was also used to identify a son named after his father much as we use Jr. today. A child named after his father, Adam, would be called Adkin to indicate 'Little Adam' or son of Adam.

The first known recorded use of the name occurred two times in 1273 when a man by the name of Adam LeFullere was listed on the Hundred Roll as Adekyn LeFullere. This Adam LeFullere was most likely a son of Adam and this entry signified that he was "Little" Adam LeFullere thus Adekyn LeFullere.

The preceding has taken our name through its first transition from Adam to Adkin; following we will make the progression to Adkins. During the Thirteenth century in the London area a move had started to give all people two names. This movement was initiated because it had become nearly impossible (where large numbers of people had gathered-London for example) for record keepers such as tax collectors to differentiate people of the same given name. Although the use of two names was started for this reason, it led to the common tradition of family names, thus making it possible for people to trace their ancestry which was and still is impossible to do prior to the Thirteenth century. This two-name policy gradually spread throughout the British Isles so that by the time our ancestors came to America-early 1600s-it was in full compliance.

When this policy (giving everyone two names) was being implemented, the official charged with the responsibility would use one of five ways to gain the second name: Matrinimical - after the mother - produced such names as Janeson (Jane's son); Personal - Characteristic - giving us the names Short, Long, Redd, etc.; Location - provides names such as Hill, Lane, Rivers, etc.; Occupation - provides names such as Smith, Carpenter, Miller, etc; Patrinimical - after the father - provides names such as Stephenson, Johnson, etc. The last method led to the development of our name. A person named Adkin would have a son named Noah (for example) and the official would say "that is Noah, son of Adkin," and then list the son's name as Noah ADKINSON with the son indicating son of. After coming to America, most families dropped the "on" as ours did, and the name became Adkins with the "s" left as the indication that the name originally ended in "on".

The earliest proven records of our family from 1716 through the Revolutionary War had the name entered, most often, as Atkinson although Adkins, Adkinson, and Atkins were used. Our earliest known ancestor William V. Adkins is entered in Henrico, Goochland, Brunswick, and Lunenberg Counties of Virginia with all four of the above spellings. These different spellings of the name most often occurred as a result of record keeping misspellings. Since the Revolutionary War all known family members have spelled the name Adkins.

The many spellings of the name (Addykin, Adkins, Adkinson, Adkyn, Adkyns, Adkynson, Atkyn, Atkyns, Atkynson, Adkinson, Attekson, Akin, Akins, as well as the above four) came about during the Sixteenth, Seventeenth, and Eighteenth centuries. Many people, because of their extremely primitive living conditions, did not learn to read and write thus when some government official (census taker, court clerk, etc) needed to record the name they did it phonetically or simply as they thought it should be.

--- There are no records of Mary and her first name is known only from death records of some of her children in Wayne Co., WV. and from a 1773 Pittsylvania deed. Several family researchers are carrying her as a Fry and daughter of George Fry Sr. Mary the d/o George Sr. married Parker's oldest son Parker Millington; this may have been the cause of some researchers making this mistake. If, indeed Mary was a Fry and there is no evidence of this, she would have been a sister to George and not his daughter.

--- Parker is listed in Capt. John Lucas' and Capt. Burke's Company during the Revolution.
MILITARY: The Battle of Point Pleasant is now considered by the historians to be the first battle of the Revolutionary War. Parker participated in that battle (1773) and his name is listed on the monument. His name, along with his sons Hezekiah and Millington, is also, listed on the monument to Revolutionary War soldiers of Giles County located at Perisberg, Virginia.
--- In 1774 Parker and his wife Mary moved to an area on Sinking Creek of the New River.
--- In 1780 he was appointed overseer of the road from Sinking Creek to the hollow of Doe Creek.
--- 1791 court record of Montgomery Co. gives Parker an exemption from taxes because of age and infirmities.
--- "ADKINS BOOK" by Ronnie Adkins pg
--- Parker and Mary lived on the South side of the Pigg River (Story Creek area) in the Snow Creek District of what is today Franklin Co. VA. At the time of their marriage the area was in Halifax Co. becoming Pittsylvania in 1767, Henry in 1776 and Franklin in 1785. They owned at least 175 acres of land bordered by the Pigg River on the North and the Story Creek on the East (see Halifax Survey bk. 1 pg 197). They lived on this land until Parker was about 50 years old and all their children were born here except Sherrod B. who was born in Fincastle Co.
--- In the year 1772 Parker and Mary began preparing for a move that would take them to the very edge of the frontier; in that year on 19 May they sold 50 acres of their land to Parker's father (Pittsylvania deed bk 2 pgs 443-444). They had previous to this sold land to Parker's brother Henry as proven by a deed dated 15 Mar. 1773 when Henry sold the land. This deed read in part "---it being the land the said Henry now lives on which he bought from his brother Parker---". "---and boundaries will more fully appear by the deed he has from his father William Atkinson Sr." (Pittsylvania deed bk 3 pg 343-344). This move, made along with Parker's brother Sherwood, was to the sinking Creek of the New River of Fincastle County and was completed in about a year for on 11 Sept. 1773 they are on record as living in Fincastle County. A deed in Pittsylvania dated that date states "Parker Atkinson and Mary his wife of Fincastle County to George Herndon of Pittsylvania Co---". (Pittsylvania deed bk 3 pgs 469-470). This move ensure that Parker would spend his entire lifetime on the edge of the American Frontier. One could say he spent 80 years where the action was.
--- In Fincastle 7 Jan. 1775 Parker had 144 acres surveyed on the Sinking Creek.South side of John's Mountain. Other records proving when and where he & Mary lived are listed below.
--- 20 May, 1774 Parker listed in Capt. John Lucas' Co. & Capt. Burke's Co.
--- A 1780 record listing Parker as overseer of road from Steep bank of Sinking Creek to the hollow of Doe Creek.
--- 1782, 1789, & 1790 tax lists with Parker & other family members on the Sinking Creek South Side of John's Mt. & Salt Pond Mt. of the New River.
--- A Montgomery Co. Court record of 1791 giving Parker an exemption of taxes because of age & infirmities.
--- The Battle of Point Pleasant is now considered by the historians to be the first battle of the Revolutionary War. Parker participated in that battle 1773) and his name is listed on the monument. His name, along with his sons Hezekiah & Millington, is also, listed on the monument to Revolutionary War Soldiers of Giles Co. located at Perisberg, VA.
--- To date there is no record of a will, estate settlement, etc. that would name all of Parker & Mary's children, however, death records, tradition & other sources fairly well prove the following:
--- Per Mona Gouveia: My research has led me to believe that my grandmother's account of Parker's relationship with Bluesky is correct. She had been told by her grandma Angeline Adkins Lucas (d/o Cainaan Adkins, g/d Hezekiah Adkins, ggd Littleberry), that her ggg grandfather Parker brought home his "Indian" bride after Pt. Pleasant, she took on the name "Mary" after Parker's favorite Aunt and their two children, Littleberry & Charity were born at that time, not before as some accounts suggest. Parker & Mary-Bluesky, went on to have several other children. He was also married quite young, prior to his Rev. War service and apparently had two children, with his young bridge dying in child-birth with the second. Parker's first wife was Polly Fry. I happened upon this information while researching my Fry family line and most Fry researchers have excellent documentation. With all of the confusing accounts and lack of proper documentation remaining from that era,not to mention the fact that everyone back then appeared to have the same names (Mary, Polly, Mary-Polly, etc)it's no wonder that accuracy has been lost.

It states that Henry Bowling [his name is spelled both "Bolling" and "Bowling" in the record] and Jackson Fry posted bond of 50 pounds on 6 March 1846. The license itself is difficult to read because there are several ^ (with insertions between the lines) and a name marked out and written over. But I believe it says: "I John D Mims Clerk of the Pike county Court do hereby certify that the oral consent of the said Susanah Adkins was given and also the necessary certificate was produced to me from Sarah Bowling authorising me to issue these license...18 September 1846" Jackson Fry and A.J. Bowling attested Sarah Bowling's consent. William Raney? [not sure of the spelling] performed the marriage on 20 September 1846. **
