COLEMAN -
Name Meaning & Origin
Definition:
1) An occupational name, a coleman was a man who gathered charcoal (from Old English "col," coal and "mann," man) or, sometimes, a name for the personal servant of a man named Cole.
2) A patronymic name from the Old Irish given name Colman, from Columbun (from Latin columba, meaning "dove").
Surname Origin: English, Scottish
The surname Coleman or Colman is said to be derived from the Saxon Baptismal name of Colman or Colmannus, equivalent of the Latin Columba", meaning a pigeon or dove.
Still other writers maintain that the name is derived from the Latin "Colles", meaning hill or mountain, which would imply either that the first bearers of the name were hillmen or that their place of residence was on a hill.
Though families called Coleman are known to have settled in Ireland as early as the thirteenth century, having come from England, where the name is numerous, Coleman in Ireland almost always denotes a Gaelic origin.
The sept of O Colmain a branch of the Ui Fiachrach, was located in the barony of Tireach, Co. Sligo, and representatives of it are still living in north Connacht.
Colemans, however, are more numerous in Co. Cork.
These are of a sept called O Clumhain in Irish which, like the foregoing, originated in Co. Sligo.
The branch of it which migrated to Munster became numerically strong. Indeed they are even more numerous than would appear from statistics at first sight, because O Clumhain has also been anglicized Clifford and there are many Cliffords in Kerry and Cork. Clifford, like Coleman, is a well known indigenous surname in England, but only a small proportion of Irish Cliffords are of English origin.
While the Anglicized versions of Irish names are familiar to most people, many Irish names have a long and proud Gaelic heritage that is often unknown. The original Gaelic form of the name Coleman is O Colmain, which means son of Colman; the name Colman is in turn derived from the word "colm," which means "dove."
|
Spelling variations include: Colman, Coleman, O'Colman, MacColeman, McColeman, Coalman, Coulman, Colemen, Colmen, Coalmen, Colmin, Colmen, Coulmen, Coulmin, Colemin and many more.
First found in county
Sligo where they were a sept of O'Colmain, a branch of
Hy Fiachrach.
Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Thomas Coleman, who arrived in America from Marlborough in Wiltshire, England; Thomas Coleman settled in Newbury, and later Boston, Massachusetts. He was under contract, but not indentured to
Sir Richard Saltonstall, to keep his cattle.
Among the early record of the name in England and mentioned in the "Doomsday Book" compiled by the Norman conquerors in the latter part of the Eleventh Century, is Robert Filius Coleman of Westmoreland and Cumberland Counties about 1176; John and Roger Coleman and other in Norfolk County in 1208.
One of the early seats of the family in England was in Norfolk County, where John and Roger Coleman, above mentioned, were the owners of land in 1208 and in 1593; one Robert Coleman was the representative of the line. Robert was succeeded by Jeremiah, then Edward and Henry about 1615.
Jeremiah Coleman of Norfolk, was probably descended from John Coleman who resided there in the early Fifteenth Century and was the father of Robert Coleman who had two sons Jeremiah and Edward. George Coleman, who made his home in Essex. He was also the father of a son named George Coleman. It is generally believed that all of the Colamns and Colemans were of common ancestry, at a remote period.
Samuel Coleman of County Suffolk was married to Mary Bettison in the early Sixteenth Century. They were the parents of Robert Coleman, born in England and who became the father of our emigrant ancestor to America .

Robert E COLEMAN "The Immigrant" b abt 1622? England d 1689 Tindalls Point, Gloucester County, Va md Elizabeth Grizzell abt 1650 in Rappanhannock, Essex, Virginia b abt 1630 in Rappanhannock, Essex, Virginia d 1682 in Essex Co., Virginia. dau of William Grizzell "the Immigrant"
[ William Grizell born 1610 Rappahannock co., VA died 1658 Rappahannock co., VA

--- Robert Coleman came to America on 2 May 1638 as a headright of Thomas Symons (Pat Bk I, Part II, p 624, 250 acres). Transported with Robert were David Lewis, Thomas Annis, Robert Sanders, and Thomas Dickson.
--- He settled near Tindalls Point at the south branch of the Severne River, at Mobjack Bay (later Gloucester County)
--- When Robert and his wife, Elizabeth Grizzell crossed the York River to Tindall's Point in what became Gloucester Co., they probably settled along the Severne River between Tindall's Point and Mobjack Bay.
--- His name appeared as a witness to York Co. records between 1646-48.
--- Robert Coleman was among the early colonists in Gloucester Co., which was opened for white settlement on 1 Sep 1649.
--- Robert died in Gloucester Co. sometime after 6 May 1682, the last mention of him in any existing record. During the War Between The States, Gloucester Co. records were taken to Richmond for safekeeping and were destroyed when Richmond was evacuated and burned. But the few records in existence are evidence that Robert Coleman lived in Abingdon Parish, Gloucestor Co. VA.
---The Essex County order books should have a record of Robert Coleman being issued a license to operate a tavern.
-Lowery's Restaurant in Tappahannock, Essex Co, has a placemat with places of interest in Tappahannock.
, Scots Arms Tavern and Anderton House. owned by Robert Coleman.
--- During Bacon's Rebellion in 1676, the Abingdon Parish Register was destroyed, forever denying us the facts about any children born to Robert Coleman and Elizabeth Grizzell. (VA law required that all births and deaths be reported to the parish minister.) Based on available evidence, the six known surviving children of Robert and Elizabeth Coleman were Thomas, Robert, Joseph, Grizzell, Daniel and John.

----From the Petsworth Parish Vestry Book, Gloucester Co., VA 1677-1793, p.213: 3 Feb 1728 An indenture between Samuel Coleman and the Churchwardens to bind out the son of Mary Nettles, 14yrs old George Nettles, to Samuel Coleman. Samuel and his heirs were obliged to give George Nettles three years of schooling or to "carefully teach" that he may read perfectly in the Bible. They were also to provide him with sufficient meat, drink, washing, lodging and apparel, and to teach hime a trade or business so that he did not become a burden on the Parish. It is interesting to note that the 1728 indenture was for a period of three years, and Samuel married Ann Mourning Christian 1731, three years after the initial indenture.
----On 17 May 1737, the will of Thomas Christian was probated and mentions his daughter Ann Coleman (Goochland Co., WB3, p.32)

I saw behind me those who had gone, and before me those who are to come. I looked back and saw my father and his father and all our fathers, and in front to see my son and his son, and the sons upon sons beyond. And their eyes were my eyes. As I felt so they had felt, and were to feel, as then, so now, as tomorrow and forever. Then I was not afraid, for I was in a long line that had no beginning and no end. And the hand of his father grasped my father's hand and his hand was in mine, and my unborn son took my right hand and all, up and down the line that stretched from Time That Was to Time That Is and Is Not Yet, raised their hands to show the link. And we found that we were one....

A
Prayer for Genealogists
Lord, help me dig into the past
And sift the sands of time,
That I might find the roots that made
This family tree of mine.
Lord, help me trace the ancient roads
On which my fathers trod,
And led them through so many lands
To find our present sod.
Lord, help me find an ancient book
Or dusty manuscript
That's safely hidden now away
In some forgotten crypt;
Lord, let it bridge the gap that haunts
my soul when I can't find
The missing link between some name
that ends the same as mine.

WARNING....GENEALOGY POX; [very contagious to adults]
SYMPTOMS: Continual complaints as to need for names, dates and places. Patient has blank expression, sometimes deaf to spouse and children. Has no taste for work of any kind, except feverishly looking through records at libraries, courthouses and internet, Has compulsion to write letters and send e-mail. Swears at mailman when he doesn't stop and leave mail. Frenquents strange places such as cemeteries, ruins and remote desolate country areas. Makes secret night calls. Hides phone bills from spouse and mumbles to [him or her] self. Has strange far away look in eyes.
TREATMENT: Medication is useless. There is no known cure. Disease is not fatal, but gets progressively worse. Patient should attend genealogy workshops, subscribe to genealogy magazines and be given a quiet corner in the house where he or she can be alone.
REMARKS: The unusual nature of this disease is...the sicker the patient gets, the more he or she seems to enjoy it!

Now go, write it before them in a table,
and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever-----Isaiah 30:8
The best way to preserve our family history is to share it.
