Welcome researchers! Welcome family! This site is a collection of genealogical information of my HARTWELL ancestors, from many sources collected over many years . Some of the information comes from my own work searching databases, www, microfilm, books, and the like. Other information has been graciously passed to me from fellow family researchers and members. If you are a researcher, my hope is that here you will find a lead. If you descend from people recorded here, contact me. I am Victoria Taylor-True - Daughter of Mary Jane GARDNER and Keith Bremmen TAYLOR. My direct tree lines are Listed At the INDEX. If you are related to the lineages listed please contact me.

Share information and help me fill our family Hall of Time. Time stands still for no man and our heritage grows daily. If there is a story or info you can share regarding family history or info please post it to the message board or email me to post it. I will be updating and adding new pictures and pages detailing each ancestor with a page, pictures and info. As time goes along I am sure I will get all caught up , but at this time, bear with me as I gather info and pictures to complete this major collection. Anything you have feel free to share, as I can use all the help I can get to complete this for future generations.

Yeah that is a picture of me in 1983 in olden days attire. I know I was born in the wrong generation. I do so love the times of yesteryear.

If you have anything for any group, please let me know , so I can include a copy of it with the ancestor it belongs with.

CLIFF NOTE SECTION:
family origins
Hartwell Genforum.com

Dr. Thomas W. Palmer, once President of the University of Alabama, was written up in the Dictionary of Alabama Biography (p. 1316). Of his genealogy he stated: "Thomas Waverly Palmer, college president, was born May 19, 1860, at Snow Hill, now Furman, Wilcox County; son of Dabney and Martha Ann (Simpson) Palmer, the former a native of Snow Hill, where he lived until 1890 when he moved to Carson, Washington County and served as a member of the constitutional convention of 1901; grandson of Stephen and Juliette (Hartwell) Palmer, of near Alton, Halifax County, Va., who moved in 1833 to Snow Hill, the latter a descendant of Sir John Hartwell, first American ancestor, who was knighted for bravery under Queen Elizabeth." ** **

There seems to be 2 families of hartwells in VA one came from 2 brothers *-- John Hartwell and William Hartwell ---- these brothers came from England and John served in the government and William was an officer John had no surviving children as I recall and went back to England to spend his last days and there is a will on him ----- also William married and married well and I believe his children inherited..... William was apart of the suppressing of the Bacon uprising and there is a written account of charges against him....

Another group of Hartwells came over about 1750 or so and it seems to be a father and son I am not sure the son was born over here or not Israel Hartwell---Paul his son and one of Paul's sons Armstead is my ggggrand father this family is document at the DAR. Paul and Israel and armstead all have wills to trace back ..... someone seems to have found that Israel came over from Scotland about 1742 but this is not a Scottish name --- the Hartwell name comes out of Buckinghamshire... in England so if your ancestor is coming out of VA look at these two families BETTY**

Hartwell goes back to 1066 and you will find it in the Domesday Book....

Hartwell was the name of a manor and comes from a spot meaning Hartwell Hart was a deer like animal --- so it was a spot also that the Hart's drank from. Or meaning plentiful. This manor was built before 1066 and burned down around 1300 or 1400 I believe and was rebuilt. A Norman woman and her son came to live on the manor after the conqueror and They took up the name de Hartwell meaning of that location. I think most Hartwells are probably descendant from the 3 sons of the last hartwells the house passed down on the wives side and the Hartwells lost direct line of the house -- The House still stands to this day and is used as a safe house for some royalty although I understand is in poor repair .... .. they also suspect they know where the original manor was located on the property ....

Okay I strongly suspect __Hartwell is coming down from the William Hartwell I spoke earlier of -----that came over with his brother John in the late 1600's the Hartwells in Brunswick and Greenville co's are from Israel Hartwell and his son Paul Hartwell which came from Scotland or shall I say set sail from Scotland around 1742... I doubt if any Hartwell is of strong Scottish blood but certainly could have married as such. Also there may be another Hartwell family I forgot about in VA that I am not sure is a close relation to these two families -- BETTY **

So lets see where our tree goes to now...Any additions or corrections , please just jump in and feel free to email me..Thanks ...Vickie

---I knew him from about 1958 (when I married his granddaughter Marlene Hartwell) until his death in 1972. He was quite tall, I would guess 6'6" before he became stooped with age. He had very large hands and feet. He had a twinkle in his eyes when he smiled that was quite noticeable. He loved fox hunting and raising foxhounds. There's an area in Spring Hill near Rock Lake pool that is now a subdivision, and he told me he had farmed it all (as a sharecropper). In his old age, he loved to watch certain programs on TV, especially boxing matches, "wrassling" and roller derby. He is buried in the Fox cemetery not far from Spring Hill. His wife "Bertie" was killed when the car in which she was a passenger was struck by a train on the chestnut street crossing. Physically she was just the opposite of Thomas (very small) but there was never much doubt who was "the boss". She was quite young when they were married. Her father John Mallory was also killed in a railroad accident, but don't know the details..-- Bud Carder **

Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever-----Isaiah 30:8

I saw behind me those who had gone, and before me those who are to come. I looked back and saw my father and his father and all our fathers, and in front to see my son and his son, and the sons upon sons beyond. And their eyes were my eyes. As I felt so they had felt, and were to feel, as then, so now, as tomorrow and forever. Then I was not afraid, for I was in a long line that had no beginning and no end. And the hand of his father grasped my father's hand and his hand was in mine, and my unborn son took my right hand and all, up and down the line that stretched from Time That Was to Time That Is and Is Not Yet, raised their hands to show the link. And we found that we were one....
