I remember seeing them when I was a little girl. They lived on top of a big hill with alot of steps in a big house. I remember the smell of the house and the bright vivid colors of the curtains and furniture. The big porch we all set on , in the evenings during our visit where a breeze constantly blew. There was a mine up behind the house somewhere and big snowball plants growing in the front yard and along the steps going up to the house. Huge oval pictures hung on the walls of ancestors, of which I would love to know about now. There were many chairs on porch as well as a swing that hung from the ceiling. I will do a summary soon of memories of my visits. Vickie This quest is now advancing to levels that a clone or two will be needed, I am sure. The Hazelwood surname is English in origin. Three locations in England called Hazelwood are in Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire and Suffolk. The surname Hazelwood, along with its variants, may have been given to those who lived or migrated from any of these three areas or from people who lived near woods of hazelnut trees. As surnames were being established in England, several unrelated individuals might have taken the name Hazelwood.
**
The Hazelwood name comes from when the Anglo-Saxon tribes ruled over Britain. The name Hazelwood was originally derived from the family having lived in the village of Hazelwood in the county of Derbyshire. Spelling variations include: Haslewood, Haselwood, Hazlewood, Hazelwood and others. First found in Salop where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D. Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Elizabeth Haslewood settled in New England in 1672; Henry and Jane Haslewood settled in New England in 1652; Walter Haslewood settled in Virginia in 1624. Elizabethton Star, Saturday, Jan. 10, 1931
Pleasant Milton Hazlewood was born in Stuart County, Va., on April 15, 1849, and died December 26, 1930, at Butler, Tenn., at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. F. Jones. His last illness was brief, although he had been in rather feeble health for some years. His funeral was conducted at the Christian Church at Butler, Tenn., by Clarence H. Poage, minister, assisted by Prof. C. A. Todd and Prof. D. M. Laws. He had been a member of the Christian Church since 1873, almost 69 years. On October 16, 1871, he married Miss Nancy Jane Smith at Fish Springs, Tenn., who, with five children, 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren survive him. His surviving children are Mrs. Bettie Ramsey, W. G. Hazlewood, Mrs. J. F. Jones, and Mrs. J. Donnelly Butler, of Butler, and Robert A. Hazlewood of Fish Springs. A daughter, Mrs. Mary Dove Graybeal, died on April 25, 1926, and two girls and one boy died in their infancy. Prof. D. M. Laws and Prof. Clarence H. Poage spoke of his friendships and his optimism. He was well and favorably known in upper East Tennessee. A profusion of beautiful flowers were given by friends and relatives and a large crown was present at the funeral services. The pallbearers were his nephews, Robert Hazlewood, Clyde Ramsey, Rhudy Ramsey, Jimmie Ramsey, Hubert Ramsey, Earl Ramsey and Sproles Butler. The flower-bearers were Mrs. Clyde Ramsey, Mrs. J. B. Ramsey, Mrs. Mary Ramsey Goodwin, Mrs. U. G. Trivett, Mrs. Elizabeth Sproles, Mrs. Robt. Smith, Miss Florence Eller and Miss Louise Hazlewood.
--- Elizabethton Star, May 6, 1942 Aunt Jane and Uncle Pleaz Hazlewood Beloved By All By Sherman Grindstaff Among many of the prominent citizens of the Butler vicinity who played a great part in the earlier days in the building of that community was Pleasant Hazlewood, now deceased, known by his friends and admirers as Uncle "Pleaz." He was a man of boundless energy and was a prominent farmer, and successful stock raiser and businessman. Uncle "Pleaz" through his generosity and hospitality with his good wife who is now living, Aunt Jane Hazlewood, fed hundreds of people without charge. The latch string on his door always a standing invitation to the public to come to his home and partake of his hospitality. He was known in the community as the "Apostle of Sunshine." Nothing thrilled this good man more than having log rollings, corn-huskings, etc. to the pleasure of his neighbors and friends. Uncle "Pleaz" owned the first hack that came to his community. He would loan this novelty of transportation to his friends whenever they wanted or needed it. It is said that he hauled hundreds of bodies to the cemetery in this hack without charge. It can truthfully be said of this man that he lived beside the road, and was a friend to his fellow man. Uncle "Pleaz" was an old time fiddler. He certainly enjoyed pulling the bow across the strings. He could perform the act skillfully too. He, on numerous occasions fiddled with the famous Taylor brothers, Bob and Alf. He generally carried off the prize at the Old Fiddlersï Contest He also was a great sportsman with the old hog rifle. It was indeed recreation for him to attend and participate with other old-timers in shooting matches. Mark Anthony in his funeral oration for Julius Caesar, said: The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones. That is not true, I am happy to say. If it were true, the world would be in total chaos today, because evil is destructive. Regardless of this terrible war there is good in the world, which will ultimately triumph. It is the good, which lives forever, and the evil which is forgotten. It is true the Scriptures tell us that the sins of the father shall be visited upon his children even unto the third and fourth generation, but they also say that goodness and mercy endureth forever. .....evil endures long; even the horrors of war are forgotten in a generation. But the good that men, (unreadable Xerox)....as the splendid man that this article is honoring, accomplish in this world can never die. Someone has appropriately said these words: Let us not mourn his going; Let us not rejoice to know That earthly labors are finished- He was prepared to go. Let us emulate his virtues, that men of us may say: The world is brighter, better because he passed this way. |
