Welcome researchers! Welcome family! This site is a collection of genealogical information of my QUESENBERRY ancestors, from many sources collected over many years . Some of the information comes from my own work searching databases, www, microfilm, books, and the like. Other information has been graciously passed to me from fellow family researchers and members. If you are a researcher, my hope is that here you will find a lead. If you descend from names recorded here, contact me. I am Victoria Taylor-True - Daughter of Mary Jane GARDNER and Keith Bremmen TAYLOR. My direct lines are here. More sights are linked up often, so check back *S*

Yeah that is a picture of me in 1983 in olden days attire. I know I was born in the wrong generation. I do so love the times of yesteryear. My mother says I look like my great-aunts when they were young, so as we find and locate pictures, I guess we will find out just how much I do.

This page will be a constant work in progress, as I meet new cousins, and add new photos and information. If you feel you are connected to our family, please contact us. We would love to hear from you and add "new Branches" to the tree. If you contact us and provide information, please let us know how you would like to be cited. We are forever grateful, for all cousins help! There are missing pictures and information. If you have any thing that would add to this collection and help fill in the missing spots please email me or contact me for a family sheet and I will mail you one to fill out.

This is a set of genealogical records with both ancestry and decadency sets of data based on my family. Nothing is set in stone and all things in genealogy have to be vailidated to be true. So at this point , this genealogist is data collecting and processing validation as it become founded or shared. The name originated in Germany, or the Holy Roman Empire, as Deutchland was once called.
The first tells the description and history of the region known as Questenberg 1 The second one has photos of the ruins Questenburg castle. 2
The first to bear a title of the land was a Fredericus De Questenberg, a knight or page in the service of Friedrich Von Beichlingen who granted that title to him. It appears to me that Friedrich Von Beichlingen had a son named Heinrich who in succession to his father became the count of Beichlingen. Tielmann Von Questenberg was the first to bear the surname Questenberg in our lineage, and he was the son of a count Heinrich. Could it be that Heinrich Von Beichlingen usurped the title Von Questenberg and gave it to his son Tielmann, or perhaps Heinrich married Fredericus De Questenberg's daughter and gave their son his maternal inheritance? Tielmann's wife Sybella Von Suchteln (as some spell it) **

Thomas Questenbury b. 1608, Bromley, Kent Co., England d.1672, Canterbury, England .
Thomas was the beginning of the American Quesenberry's. Thomas went back to East Greenwich, England about 1650 and was listed as a shoemaker in 1663. Thomas came to Virginia in 1624, where he married and raised his family.
John Quisenberry deserves the Pioneer label, since he was the first of the Christenberry clan to remain in the New World and was buried there in Virginia. He became a planter, landowner and part time surveyor’s assistant. In the latter capacity, he surveyed property in 1651 which was bought by a Thomas Pope.
[[---Humphrey Pope appears as surety on a bond of John Quisenberry in Rappahonnoch, (now Richmond County) dated may 12, 1656. He obtained a deed from Thomas Pope for 150 acres near cliffs in Westmoreland County, February 2, 1659.

---States that Humphrey Pope was security for John Quisenberry "May 12, 1656" FACT: the correct date was 12 May 1683.]]

In 1666, John himself bought 100 acres adjoining this property on which he established his home. This home endured for at least 200 years and as late as 1890’s was owned by a Mr. Jenkins who intended to make it a model farm of Westmoreland Co. The Pope property was later sold to Thomas Lee, who built in 1730 the historic Stratford Hall, home to two signers of the Declaration of Independence and birthplace of Robert E. Lee.

NOTE: [by Barbara Quisenberry Pace (descent of the emigrant John--Humphrey Sr, Thomas, Aaron, Aaron Jr, Benjamin, Oscar Bivan, Issac Arnold & me.-Barbara] In doing research on William Quisenberry, son of Humphrey Quisenberry Sr I found a widow Mary in Dettingen Parish Register, Pr. William Co.,VA, The name was spelled Cousinberry/Cousenbary. In 1728 William & his wife Mary sold the land left to them by Humphrey & "more or less" disappeared. I've a sneaking suspicion that this Dettingen Parish family is that William. This is also the only place I've ever seen the name spelled in this way. Mary is apprenticing 2 of her sons. **
William as oldest surveying son inherited most of John’s holdings (John had at least 2 other pieces of property) and remained mostly in Westmoreland Co. William moved on to present day King George Co., north of Westmoreland, and his descendants to Kentucky. (Buena Vista on the Potomac may have been Humphrey’s home).

--- The date of his birth is not known, but assuming that he was at least 21 when he first bought land, he was born not later than 1674, and probably earlier. As his father was born in 1627, and Humphrey was the youngest son, he was probably born when his father was at least 33, which would put a lower bound of 1660 on his birth, with 1665-1670 seeming the most likely range. ** **

-In September, 1758, Hennings' Virginia Statutes, the House of Burgesses made an appropriation to pay David Johnston, of Culpeper, a sum of money for food furnished by him to friendly Indians. David Johnston remained in Culpeper until 1778, and then came across the Alleghanies, settling on the plateau or territory between Big Stoney Creek and Little Stoney Creek at what is now know as the John Phleger farm, where he died in 1786, his wife in 1813, and they are both buried on this farm. The house which he built in1778 is still standing and forms a part of the residence of the late John Phleger, and is no doubt the oldest structure in the County of Giles. David Johnston and his wife, Nannie, or Annie, Abbott Johnston, had eight children, three sons and five daughters, all born in Culpeper, the eldest; Sallie, had married Thomas Marshall before the family left Culpeper.

Elza Cox and some others give as the parents of George Quesenberry of Montgomery Co. Aaron Quesenberry and Joyce Dudley of Orange County, Virginia. This is an error, as George Quesenberry son of Aaron Quesenberry & Joyce Dudley is known to have lived and died in Orange Co., marrying thrice there. Also, he was born around 1760, and would have thus been only 10 years old when George of Montgomery Co. married Martha. This attribution seems to have come about solely by substituting George for James Frederick, discussed below, when the evidence became clear that George rather than James Frederick was the name of the patriarch of the southwest Virginia Quesenberrys.

Garvet Quesenberry, Kelly Webb, and many others instead give as the father of George, a James Frederick Quesenberry, b. 1720's, and then sometimes go on to attach James Frederick as either a son or a brother of the afore-mentioned Aaron Quesenberry. (The annual gathering of Carroll & Floyd County Quesenberry's is even called -The Descendants of James Frederick Quesenberry Reunion.) But this seems to be based entirely on a widely circulated account called the -Isaac Quesenberry Record-, which (correctly) names Thomas -Buck- Quesenberry's father as Frederick, but then goes on to claim as children of Frederick, the Moses, Nancy and others who are really Frederick's brothers or sisters, and in an attempt to tie into the families documented by Anderson Chenault Quisenberry, conflates this -settler- Frederick with James the son of Aaron & Joyce, calling the combined personage James Frederick. When more disciplined researchers uncovered George in county records, the romantics seem to have then elevated the mythical James Frederick from father of Thomas (Buck) to father of George, with some of them leaving him as a son of Aaron, and others noticing the age problem and calling him a brother of Aaron. While George's father may indeed be a brother of Aaron (I believe he is), there is no reason to call him -James Frederick-, as that name was only the result of combining the name of George's son with that of Aaron's son, and Frederick was not a Quesenberry name before George Quesenberry married the sister of Frederick Slinker. The most recent variant, adopted by Mr. S. H. Landreth of Pulaski, VA, in his book on the Quesenberry family, and picked up by others, seems to be to give the father of George as Aaron's son Moses, saying that Moses had a son George who stopped off in Bedford County before moving to Kentucky. In fact, that Moses, who was b. ca 1745-1750, was much too young to be the father of George of Grayson Co., also born ca 1750. (Mr. Landreth manages this by moving back the birthdates of Moses and his father Aaron and Aaron's father Thomas by about 20 years from the earliest endpoint of the range suggested by the known records.)

Most researchers agree, though, that the given names used by sons and grandsons of George of Montgomery Co. overlap with those used by known descendents of Thomas Quesenberry and Miss Rawlings too much to be a coincidence (particularly the frequency of the names Moses and Aaron, which came in from the Rawlings side), the few names appearing in the Montgomery Co. line and not in the Orange Co. family being clearly attributable as coming in from the distaff side, as Frederick from Frederick Slinker and Tobias from Tobias Phillips, etc., and likewise for most of the names appearing in the Orange Co. family but not in the Montgomery Co. family. As virtually all records concerning Thomas Q. (son of Humphrey) are lost, by far the most likely explanation is that Thomas had at least one other son besides Aaron, and that our George's father is one of these unknown brothers of Aaron, possibly named Moses or Thomas. (If he was named Thomas, he was probably older than Aaron, but if named Moses, probably younger. The tradition among Virginia planters was very strong to name the first son after the father's family, usually his father, and the second son after the mother's family, usually her father or favorite brother.) But there is NO known evidence other than the pattern of given names that this hypothetical brother existed.

---- Carroll Co News : Thursday -July 29,1968 THE CIVIL WAR QUESENBERRYS By John Perry Alderman
Having passed over in some form, the Carroll County Quesenberry's. I thought that it would be briefly in order to mention a family of the same name in Floyd County, VA. There are two reasons for attempting this: first it is the only instance I know of any family with nine sons in the Confederate Army and secondly several of these sons lived at times or have descendants in Carroll County, Virginia. On the other hand, my knowledge of John Quesenberry and his family is such that I am sure that there are errors in what follows so having made my apology let us look at the family of John and Nancy Quesenberry. John Quesenberry, born in 1798, is shown as 52 in the 1850 census of' Floyd County VA, and so was born about 1798 I feel sure that his father was one of the early Quesenberry (s/o George and Martha Quesenberry) settlers in Carroll County Virginia John married Nancy Hylton the daughter of George Hylton and many of their sons bear "Hylton" names. The 1840 census of Floyd shows a household of fourteen, including John and Nancy; members of the household are not however indicated by name. The 1850 census, which does give a listing by name, shows John and Nancy with 10 children, but does not list the older children who by then married and left home, in all it seems there were fourteen offspring's. **

He joined Company D, 54th Va (Carroll Co had a company in the same regiment) {Company G, Capt George Hylton Turman Company) and was mustered into service October 1,1863 at Jacksonville ( the name for the Town of Floyd in the Civil War days) by Captain Slusher . --- In August 1917, my grandfather, Henry (he was called Cal) went from Eden, NC (then called Spray) to Siler City, NC to visit a friend. A short time after arriving, he was taken ill (stomach ulcer, according to the death certificate) and died within a week from kidney failure. Because of the expense involved in transporting him back to Eden, which the family could not afford, he was buried somewhere around either Siler City or Matthews, NC. I have not been able to locate where he is buried.
---He was a carpenter/farmer by trade.
--- He moved the family from Floyd Co down to Eden in 1902, when my dad (John Simmons) was 16.--- info by Robert Quesenbury

--- My middle name is Calvin, my first Robert. My mother's dad was Robert Lee Miles. I was always told by my mother that I was named after my two grandfathers. However, my grandfather's middle name, certified by me on the death certificate, is Callohill. Everyone called him Cal, so I suppose that my dad and mom never really knew his real middle name. I have been told by my brother-in-law's sister, who lives in Floyd, that there is a hill in Floyd Co which still is known as Cal Hill by the old folks. His farm was located at the base of that hill. --- info by Robert Quesenbury

-- Info from Betsy 9-08 -- Emmett Clisby Quesenberry weighed over 400 pounds at his death in 1941. Grandma Emma never weighed over 125 pounds in her entire life. I know Great Grandpa Elijah was around 90 years old when he left us. He mowed a whole acre field with a pocket knife scooting along on his hip. He put all the grass up in the barn for his cow. He hulled bushels of black walnuts every fall and gave them to the grand children for Christmas. He was a wonderful man and I consider it a honor to have been related to him. They were all very faithful to God. Grandpa Emment was a holiness preacher and of course we all live the example he left for us. Both of his sons were preachers and several of his grandsons are also preachers as well as my only son has followed his path.
