Welcome researchers! Welcome family! This site is a collection of genealogical information of my WARD ancestors, from many sources collected over many years . Some of the information comes from my own work searching databases, www, microfilm, books, and the like. Other information has been graciously passed to me from fellow family researchers and members. If you are a researcher, my hope is that here you will find a lead. If you descend from names recorded here, contact me. I am Victoria Taylor-True - Daughter of Mary Jane GARDNER and Keith Bremmen TAYLOR. My direct lines are here. More sights are linked up often, so check back *S*

Yeah that is a picture of me in 1983 in olden days attire. I know I was born in the wrong generation. I do so love the times of yesteryear. My mother says I look like my great-aunts when they were young, so as we find and locate pictures, I guess we will find out just how much I do.

This page will be a constant work in progress, as I meet new cousins, and add new photos and information. If you feel you are connected to our family, please contact us. We would love to hear from you and add "new Branches" to the tree. If you contact us and provide information, please let us know how you would like to be cited. We are forever grateful, for all cousins help! There are missing pictures and information. If you have any thing that would add to this collection and help fill in the missing spots please email me or contact me for a family sheet and I will mail you one to fill out.

        • 3 Isaac Lemasters b 1728 Charles County MD married Nancy Anne Scott 1748 b 1728 in Chaptico, Maryland. daughter of Reverend Robert Scott. and Elizabeth ___
          -- (moved from Charles County MD to Morgantown WV)
          -- Robert Scott, was an Anglican minister who had been sent to Maryland in 1724 by the Bishop of London to serve as rector of All Faith Parish, an assignment which included all of St. Mary's and Charles counties. Scott also established a school in the parish which his daughter probably attended.
          -- Anne Scott is on record as leasing a farm on 25 December 1746 at Chaptico from her mother and one Walter Burch. Anne was eighteen years old at the time.
          -- Isaac Lemasters and Anne Scott settled farther west in Maryland in Prince George's County. Apprehensive over wild rumors that the Ohio Indians were shocking victory over the British and Virginian army led by General Edward Braddock in 1755, Isaac and Anne retreated to the new English army under the efficient direction of General John Forks of the Ohio, Isaac Lemasters showed enough confidence in the expected outcome of the campaign to purchase a sixty acre farm in Frederick County, then the farthest western outpost of Maryland, from an earlier settler, Joseph Flint, on 8 August 1758. Isaac was not disappointed in General Forbes. In November, Forbes directed an assault against Fort Duquesne which inspired the French to burn their own fort and flee the area, their Indian allies having already abandoned the defense.
          -- The precise location of Isaac Lemaster's farm in Frederick County cannot be determined from the description of the property in the deed from Flint to Lemasters, but it is believed that the farm lay near the present-day community of Flintsone in Allegheny County northeast of Cumberland. Isaac Lemasters lived here throughout the decade other the 1760's, but in 1770, he again felt the urge to move farther west. He sold his sixty acres back to Joseph Flint on 18 August 1770, and removed beyond the headwaters of the Potomac River into an area just beginning to attract settlers, the great basin of the Monongahela River.
          -- Isaac selected for his new settlement a site on the Monongahela River at the mouth of a small stream known locally as Decker's Creek. Isaac applied to the Virginia Land Office for a four hundred acre land grant, but before the grant was issued he agreed to sell part of it to Zackquill Morgan who had settled in the same area two years earlier. Morgan's survey as the assignee of Isaac Lemasters was completed on 29 April 1781, and Isaac's certificate of ownership from the Virginia Land Office was issued on 26 February 1780. Morgan immediately had his portion of Isaac Lemasters's land grant, some two hundred and twenty acres surveyed into lots and established the town of Morgantown, the new county seat for Monongalia County formed in 1776. Isaac continued to live on the remainder of his land grant adjacent to Morgan's town. During the next seventeen years, Isaac acquired title to several pieces of real estate in the Morgantown area, all of which he sold before his death in 1797.
          -- Revolutionary War pension declaration filed by one of Isaac's sons, Joseph. On 21 June 1819, Joseph Lemasters, then a resident of Maury County, Tennessee, filed an application for a pension was a veteran of the armies of the Revolution. In his declaration, Joseph Stated that he had enlisted on 26 December 1776 at Morgantown, Virginia, in a company being organized by Captain David Scott. He served in the regiments of Colonel William Crawford and Colonel John Gibson until 1 March 1780. He was discharged on the date and returned to Morgantown. Shortly afterwards Joseph Lemasters left Monongalia County and resettled in Abbeville County, South Carolina. There he married Mary Waddell and later moved to Tennessee where he was living when he filed for a pension.

            (2)
            (3) Catherine Thornton 1794
            --- Before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Thomas moved to Greenbrier County where he was active in local scouting companies. He was a volunteer on Dunmore's War in 1774 and is believed to have been a participant in the Battle of Point Pleasant against the Shawnees on 10 October 1774. During the Revolution, Thomas continued to serve in frontier scouting companies, and as late as 1793 he was a member of Captain Hugh Caperton's ranger company responsible for patrolling Greenbrier and Kanawha counties. In 1794, Thomas married Catherine Thornton, believed to have been his third wife, and settled on Crooked Creek in present day Mason County around 1798. He died there 1836.

Dr. Swanston patented Swanson's Lot 17 Jul 1670 in that part of Calvert which became Prince George's Co.)"
    ----- 30 Mar 1719 Ordered that the clerk summon George Wells and Susanna Ward to attend the vestry on Sunday the 12th April after the sermon touching their living lewdly and uncontinently together. {page 60, Queen Anne Vestry Minutes}
    ---12 April 1719 Then appeared George Wells and Susanna Ward and were admonished by the vestry not to cohabit together nor frequent each others company {p. 61 Queen Anne Vestry Minutes}
    ---16 Jun 1725 George Wells and Susanna Ward were married by the Rev Jacob Henderson - {Queen Anne Parish Register} From the above records and some other tid bits not related to the pair directly it would appear that James Ward died between 17 Jan 1716 (when Frances, dau of James and Susannah Ward was born) and 1718 when the will of Thomas Wells Sr. was written where in he leaves his plantation property to all his children EXCEPT George who was given 5 shillings {Lib 14/Fol 724} implying to many that George was in disfavor with his father at that time. Certainly James Ward was deceased by the time of the parish actions against the two in 1719. From this it would appear that George served as the step-father to the children of James Ward and Susannah Swanson. They must have held him in high regard because in addition to Nathan naming his son Wells Ward:
    ---08 Dec 1726 Thomas Ward of Pr. George's County "planter" for natural love and affection I bear unto my well beloved father in law (term used for step father in the early days) George Wells for his great care and trouble of me in my affliction of sickness - all my Indian corn and tobacco now in Annn Arundel Co. on the plantation that Joseph Wells dwells on (probably a son of George Wells) {Lib M/Fol. Maryland Hall of Records}.
    ---31 July 173- (date was not transcribed completely) James Sweany and Frances his wife (probably Frances Ward) named a son George Wells Sweany. ** ** ** ** ** **

  • . Nathan Ward b. 12 Feb 1713 {Queen Anne Parish} Prince George Co, MD d March 1803 md Margaret ___.
    It is thought that he is the son of Nathan Ward and the brother of Wells Ward who lived to the West on Saddle Creek in today's Grayson county. Many researchers are also looking at connections to Ward lines from Baltimore (now Prince Georges) Co., MD (where the names Nathan and Wells are also found) and it is possible that the Ward family co-migrated with the Swift and Carr families.
    SOME WARD INFO
    -- Nathan settled on Coal [Cole] Creek in present day Carroll County VA by at least 1773 and had his land surveyed in 1774. Ward's Mill Run is named after his family. On the 1773 militia list for Capt John Montgomery's company there were 4 Wards: Nathan, Wells, James and Zachariah The community he settled in was predominantly Quaker and did not participate in Lord Dunmore's war, but Nathan was no Quaker. Nathan served in the Flower Swift Militia Company during the Revolution. Nathan Ward was not on the list of those fined for missing militia musters in the Revolution nor could I find any Tory references to him, so it is suspected he actively participated on the Whig side, at least in militia duties. A Nathan Ward was made a captain on the formation of the 78th Regt of militia in August 1793 soon after the formation of Grayson county. He purchased his land from the Loyal Land Company and it was a conflicted purchase not validated until 1802. He died March 14, 1803 in Grayson County.
    -- 1782 tax list: Nathan Ward, 1 tithe, 0 slaves, 2 horse, 8 cattle. --- In 1793, District 2 of Wythe there is a Nathan Ward with 7 horses and no blacks and another Nathan Ward with 3 horses and no blacks (one of these is his nephew by brother Wells).
    -- Nathan Ward is listed in the book Carroll County, VA Early Settlers. He is also listed in Montgomery Co, VA milita lists on 5 seperate occasions. He died in Grayson Co, VA in 1803. He divided his estate between his 2 sons, Enoch and William per probated will found in Grayson Co. Will book 1-page 25. In 1822, Enoch sold his land in Grayson Co. per the Grayson Co Deed Book. Enoch was living in Rutherford Co, NC. His mother Sarah was living with him at this time. This information does tie in with Enoch having joined the 10th Infantry, Capt. Strother's Co. for the War of 1812. Enoch states he was born in 1797 in Grayson Co, VA. The other brother was William. married a Miss Williamson some time after 1803(1819?) and they moved to Hawkins, TN **
    -- Grayson County, VA Records for "Over the Mountain Men" their early Court Records in Southwest Virginia - Virginia DAR- Nathan Ward will probated march 1803 names wife and children: William, Wells, Nathan and Enoch.

    --- James Ward, Nathan Ward, Wells Ward, Zachariah Ward fought in Lord Dunmore’s War against the Shawnees in 1774 **

    --- Per Ginger Ballard: In the 1773 militia list for Capt John Montgomery's company there were 4 Wards: Nathan Wells James and Zachariah. After 1773 Zachariah was gone. Ginger figures these are the older Nathan, who died in 1803, Wells who died in 1821, and maybe the James Ward of Wythe County. She thinks that because of the commonality of names used Wells and the older Nathan are brothers. We know this Nathan isn't the son of the other Nathan because this Nathan had a son of his own named Nathan who married Anne Williams and moved away. She said several other Ward researchers have developed this theory independently.**

            --- Wade Ward (1892-1971) was an American old-time music fiddler and banjoist from Independence, Virginia. He was especially renowned for his clawhammer banjo playing. He was a frequent winner at the Galax Old Time Fiddler's Convention. His instrument, a Gibson RB-11, is now housed in the Smithsonian Institution. Along with Kyle Creed, he is thought by many to embody the 'Galax' style of clawhammer banjo playing.
            --- This selection of recordings features Wade Ward, a banjo and fiddle player from Independence, Virginia whose repertoire remained close to the tunes he learned in his youth. Clips of interviews with the musician and members of his family augment this collection of recordings from the early 1960s, when Ward was in his early 70s

      --- Ward, Enock 64 Farmer 1500 1158 ; Nancy 66
      --- The Enoch Ward family lived on the western spur of Buck Mountain where the family is buried.
      --- 1922 Reminiscenses by C. Phipps : Several years after the Civil War "Little Ben" Phipps planned to have a general hunt for some big grey wolves that still roamed Buck Mountain. He set the day on which the drive was to be made; invited his neighbors and hunters from other neighborhood, with their guns and hounds. He had planned the drive Carefully and had the men placed all around the foot of the mountain for several miles. Some forty or fifty dogs were in the hunt. When all had time to get to their places in the hunt the dogs were let loose and the music began in a short time. The wolves were routed out in or about the headwaters of Saddle Creek. The writer and some others had just about time to get to their appointed stand on top of the meuntain near Saltpeter Cliff, to find. that the dogs were in full swing climbing towards the low gap a mile or more east of us. After listening to the music for an hour or more we heard the sound of an old time rifle in the hands of Enoch Ward; it cracked loud and clear. We made a rush for that point and found a big grey wolf stretched on the ground dead. He was running at such speed that although the bullet passed through him just behind the shoulder he yet went about one hundred yards before be fell dead. Major S. M. Dickey and others had succeeded in crippling one other of the three wolves in a laurel thicket, and with a portion of the dogs closed in on him. There was a skirmish with dogs, wolf, and the men that would have been the delight of that old bear hunter, Wilburn Waters to see. The other wolf escaped and was never seen here again. After some little time a horn was blown and the hunters all gathered at the low gap where the commander, Ben Phipps, had ready about a five gallon keg of good apple brandy and a great big basket of good things to eat. Then all the hunters, including dogs, were invited to the home of the commander where there was prepared a hot supper with hot brandy stews for all who would drink and eat. No man was better pleased with this hunt than "Little Ben" Phipps. He had the hides carefully dried and stuffed and when mounted looked as real as when alive. Some months afterwards he prepered his two horse wagon, covered with a good wagon sheet, mounted his animal show of wolves, foxes and squirrels on top of the wagon, with two or three men fiddlers in the wagon, and drove dowii to Independence on court day, through the street stopping along in front of the houses, playing some lively tunes near each home and everybody came out on the street to see the show. ** **
